From Practitioner to CEO

Before founding Arlo Solutions in 2014, Lonye Ford began her career in the United States Air Force at just 19 years old, starting at the help desk before working her way through technical and cybersecurity roles across the federal government. That hands-on experience gave Ford a firsthand understanding of both the technical and operational realities behind mission execution, a perspective that continues to shape her leadership philosophy today.

During the conversation, Ford emphasized the importance of understanding the people responsible for implementing strategy and executing the mission. While organizations often focus on high-level planning and transformation initiatives, she noted that long-term success depends on whether those strategies can realistically be implemented by the teams doing the work every day.

“We are writing and talking at very strategic levels, and we don’t think about people who have to implement.”

Ford also reflected on the realities of entrepreneurship and leadership, describing business ownership as a demanding responsibility that requires persistence, resilience, attention to detail, and disciplined decision-making. Building and scaling a company, she explained, is not simply about having strong ideas or technical expertise. It requires leaders to slow down, carefully review decisions, and maintain discipline across every part of the business.

Ford also credited much of Arlo’s growth to complementary leadership. While she focuses heavily on people, strategy, and business development, Arlene Wube, COO & President of Arlo Solutions leads many of the operational functions that help support and scale the company. Together, that balance between vision and operational execution has helped shape Arlo’s long-term approach to growth.

As companies grow, Ford emphasized the importance of building strong teams, hiring the right people, and creating an environment built on accountability and high standards. She also acknowledged that leadership often requires making thoughtful business decisions without always having perfect information available. While data and process remain important, leaders must also rely on experience, intuition, and the ability to adapt as organizations evolve.

Compliance Isn’t Enough

One of the central themes throughout the discussion focused on the evolving cybersecurity landscape and the difference between compliance and actual risk management.

Drawing from years of experience in governance, risk, and compliance, Ford explained that organizations can become overly focused on checklists and moment-in-time assessments rather than understanding how threats impact real systems and mission outcomes.

“We get too comfortable with the checklist,” Ford said.

Instead, she emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring, threat-informed decision-making, and cybersecurity strategies that directly support mission outcomes.

Ford also discussed the communication gap that often exists between technical teams and decision-makers. Mission leaders do not want technical explanations; they need understand how cyber risks affect real operational capabilities and where resources should be prioritized.

Growth Happens Through Partnerships

Beyond cybersecurity, the conversation also explored the role relationships and partnerships play in building sustainable growth within GovCon.

Ford discussed the importance of mentor-protégé relationships, joint ventures, and strategic teaming partnerships that allow organizations to combine strengths and pursue opportunities more effectively together than they could independently.

Rather than trying to be the “total solution” in every situation, Ford emphasized the importance of understanding where partnerships can strengthen delivery and better support customer needs. She pointed to Arlo’s long-standing mentor-protégé and joint venture relationship with Deloitte as an example of how collaboration can help businesses expand capabilities and create long-term value.

 Understanding Contract Vehicles Creates Opportunity

The discussion also explored how acquisition modernization and contract vehicles are helping drive innovation across government.

Ford explained that understanding contract vehicles is essential for companies navigating the federal market. The right vehicles can help organizations access opportunities more efficiently, collaborate more effectively with government customers, and move capabilities to mission owners faster.

One area she highlighted was the growing use of Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements, which allow government and industry teams to prototype, iterate, and refine capabilities more collaboratively than traditional acquisition approaches often allow.

While agencies continue pushing toward greater speed and agility, Ford stressed the importance of supporting the acquisition professionals and implementers responsible for executing these processes every day. Contracting Officers (COs) and Contracting Officer Representatives (CORs), she explained, are often balancing evolving acquisition requirements with limited resources and operational demands.

For modernization efforts to succeed, organizations must continue investing not only in policy and technology, but also in the people responsible for carrying out the mission.
